A nice war-date Union naval officer's letter introduction, 1p. 8vo., written by Charles J. MacConnell 2nd Asst. Engineer, USS Mattabasett, Navy Yard, Washington, Aug. 25, 1864 with cover addressed to: "Capt. Thos. W. Middleton, Columbia Hospital, Washington, D. C." Middleton was originally an officer in the 9th New Jersey and was wounded in the battle of New Bern, N. C. on March 14, 1862. Later he became a captain in the Veteran Reserve Corps and was placed in command of the troops at Columbia Hospital. The letter reads, in full: "I take the pleasure in introducing…the bearer Mr. Sackett, a chum and messmate of mine. Will you please assist him in his search after his friend Lieut. [Homer] Curtis [of Co. D, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Art.]?" Also included are two small printed calling cards. One reading: "C. J. Mc.Connell, U. S. N." and the other "F. H. Brown, U. S. N." Francis H.
