A good war-date Union soldier's letters, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Homer S. Sackett, Co. H, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Artillery, Clifton Heights, Va., Sept. 13, 1864, to his brother Augustine Sackett, in part: "…I am not very strong should hate to try a long march. We have lain here longer than we have at any one place…since starting on the campaign…the 2nd Division has gone to the front this morning to see how the Johnies are getting along…we may advance or…drop back to the Ferry [Harpers]. The latter I think would be the move. I hope we shall be kept…clear of Petersburg. I don't like to go there, have seen enough of that place…Curtis has been sick in Washington ever since we started on this last trip. Cousin Charles played out when we got to Harpers Ferry…we have a regular West Point youngster for a Col. who thinks it is his duty to show his power & punish the boys for every little fault. He spares not the officers…he would stand a poor chance were we to go in a fight. I would like no better…the 2nd division have found the rebus…& then a shot is fired…I am glad to hear that Alfred Sgt. Alfred Hatch 7th Conn. Vols., WIA James Island, SC 6/16/62 & Deep Bottom, Va., 8/16/64. DOW 9/9/64] is still alive. We got it here that he was dead. A mistake in Miner's [Pvt. Minor Strong WIA (leg) Cedar Creek, Va., 10/19/64] in reading his letter. Drill call comes in a few minutes…yours truly, Homer S. Sackett". Also included is a 2pp. 8vo., letter from Sackett's father and sister, Warren, CT., Sept. 11, 1864 reporting on the return home of Capt. Homer Curtiss who "looks thin but feels well" plus the original stamped transmittal covers, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, USN, USS. Mattabasett, Baltimore, Md.", are included. VG.
