A good pair of war-date Union soldier's letters, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Homer S. Sackett Co. H, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Artillery, both Clifton Heights, Va., Sept. 18, 1864, to his brother Augustine Sackett, in part: "…[first letter]…I am much better than I was and am gaining strength slowly. Have been on inspection and review this morning…the 2nd Division went out a little ways the other day, surprised & captured a regt. of Johnies. They got the Col., 17 line officers & 170 privates with but little loss on our side. They were a sorry looking set barefooted & ragged…don't come here. It will not pay…remember 2nd Brigade, 1st Division, 6th Corps. H. S. Sackett…[second letter]…our train has just come up from the Ferry with rations…regards coming to see me…there is no way to get here from the Ferry only to come with the train which comes around twice a week & must drive nights unless they stay over night on the road…I am much better than I was…hope to gain my strength in time as I am gaining but slowly have written home as encouraging a letter as I could & don't wish you to write anything to alarm them…your truly, Homer S. Sackett". Both the original stamped transmittal covers, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, USN, USS. Mattabasett, Baltimore, Md.", are included. VG.
