A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 1 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Homer S. Sackett, Co. H, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Artillery, Woodstock, Va., Sept. 23, 1864, to his brother Augustine Sackett, in part: "You have the particulars of our battles in the paper…I am safe & sound not even a scratch & the same for the Warren boys. Yesterday we charged the enemy at Strasburg & as fortune would have it flanked them & drove them like the d_l (excuse) taking their artillery 11 pieces…I have not learned the number of prisoners. The 2nd took an active part we had but 11 killed & wounded in the regt. What made our loss so light I cant imagine unless it was the shape of the ground. We slept but very little last night…with knapsack [on] for we were marching all night…Capt. Berry was wounded will likely loose his leg [he died of wounds on 9/28/64] & Lieut. Candee & Hubbard, killed that was in or company 7 privates wounded, two very severe, two very slight…in haste, H. S. Sackett. The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Engineer, U…USS. Mattabasett, Baltimore, Md.", is included. VG.
