A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Homer S. Sackett, Co. H, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Artillery, "Camp Russell near Winchester, Va., Nov. 27, 1864", to his brother Augustine Sackett, in part: "…today we have had a brigade inspection in camp…Gen. [Horatio] Wright was along. He is a fine looking officer…how did you spend the holiday. I was on guard…I walked in front of Col. Hubbard's Hd. Quarters, the Brig. band came round and played several tunes. The the regt. band followed suit commencing with "Such lumps of sugar and pieces of pie" etc…there was quite a number of Turkeys & chickens sent to this army 1 & 1/2 turkey & 5 chickens for this company. We cut them into…13 halves, then drew for them. I got a blank but my tent mate got half a chick so I had a taste…we are putting up to strong breast works & batteries to leave the 8th & 19th Corps…all are waiting to hear official reports from Sherman. I hope he will be successful & the rebellion receive an everlasting shake from his noble army. You cannot imagine what a wreck is left behind an army …I shall never forget the black clouds of smoke that towered upward as we marched up the valley. Homer Curtiss is in command of our Co. he does well. I have asked him some questions about Ed & Mary…he considers both to blame & says that Sam & Theodore saw Mary kiss E in the porch one sunday…I have no sympathy for either…your truly, Homer". The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "2nd Assistant Engineer, Augustine Sackett, U. S. Str. Mattabasett, Beaufort, North Carolina", is included. VG.
