War-date father's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Homer Sackett, Warren, Conn., Dec. 18, 1864, to his son Augustine Sackett, in part: "…our news of late is mostly encouraging. Gen's. Sherman and Thomas are doing the work up fast. Dalgreen is on hand to meet Sherman. Both navies and armies are in motion. Homer wrote me last from Petersburg…and were then under marching orders again. There service seems very hard. Homer evidently looks forward to the time when his term of enlistment will expire…the Confederacy it seems are making there death struggle amy it be a feeble one and soon…they are becoming divided among themselves. Gov. Brown denounces Jef Davis in the strongest terms. says he is more tyrannical than even Lincoln…brother Orange…says Orange is with Sherman's army 3 Brig., 3 Division, 20 Corps., Gen. Slocum's command Gary Banks as captain should you meet him you would find him loyal with his fathers honor…Homer Sackett". The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Engineer, U. S. S. Mattabasett, Sounds of North Carolina, via Fortress Monroe.", is included. VG.
