A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Homer S. Sackett, Co. H, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Artillery, "Camp of the 2nd C. V. H. A." [Petersburg, Va.], Dec. 20, 1864, to his brother Augustine Sackett, in part: "…we are on the front lines directly south of Petersburg& but a short distance from Maj. Gen. Meade's Hd. Qrts. We take our turn on picket half the regt go out at a time & stay 48 hours…we have an understanding with the Rebs to do away with picking firing…it is entirely against the rule to hold any correspondence with them what ever. A short time before…exchange of papers was daily occurrence…now they try to have us….a few nights since they invited me over to Petersburg to a ball said there were plenty of pretty galls there. Our boys thought they had better stay at home. We walk in plain sight of each other…while the next post on our right which belongs to the 9th Corps have to keep down. I recon that savannah has fallen as the forts on the right have been firing salutes this morning. The C. S. A. have got to haul in their horns or get them knocked off…Early & Hood have issued artillery without stint & Sherman & Thomas have proved themselves competent…oh if our lives can only be spared to see the day when civil war is no more…Homer S. Sackett". The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "2nd Asst. Engineer, Augustine Sackett, U. S. Str. Mattabasett, Sounds of North Carolina", is included. VG.
