War-date Connecticut home front letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by a certain George M. Kellogg, Warren, CT, Dec. 19, 1864 to his friend Augustine Sackett, in part: "…I suppose the boys are now in the vicinity of Petersburg…Mary & Ed have had a trial…Ed came on the morning that the trial was appointed with his mother & his wench but finding Mary there to stand her ground went off…without doing a think. Mary then went forward brought up her petition for a divorce which was granted…Ed…shows the white feather. The substitute business is flourishing…some ten or twelve nave been put in…at the rate of $600 each. I believe "Bennie" has one…we must have soldiers. Perhaps the Congress will devise some means for calling out the class of men who are wanted…we are accustomed to…the patriotism of our Revolutionary Fathers, but…the first,]…burst of patriotism carried into the army the floating population, many followed after from stern duty (as has been the case in this war). What was the army of the Revolution a mere handful of men. The full fighting population was about 300,000. After such a proportion…are enlisted there is no way of strengthening an army but by…sweeping conscription. I suppose this is not democratic…Democracy in its primary sense is a humbug. It naturally tends to State Rights & the next step from state rights is Secession. The very principles of Democracy teach all this…your friend & correspondent G. M. Kellogg". Also included is a 3pp. 8vo., letter from Sackett's father, Warren, CT., Jan. 18, 1865 reporting on the collection of Sackett's allotment of money from New York City. Both the original stamped transmittal covers, addressed: "Augustine Sackett, 2nd Asst. Eng', U. S. N., U. S. S. Mattabasett, North Carolina.", are included. VG.
