A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Homer S. Sackett, Co. H, 2nd Conn. Hvy. Artillery, "Near Warren Station, Va., Mar. 8, 1865", to his brother Augustine Sackett, in part: "…our armies are still victorious. Early who got so many thrashings at our hands last fall is now a prisoner. Sheridan was too many for him…there are all sorts of reports about our being consolidated with the 1st C. V. H. A. under Gen. Abbot another that we are going to the Valley and being mounted [to] join Sheridan as mounted riflemen. That is the only branch of land service we have not tried. One thing which looks reasonable is that our brigade is to be broken up if that happens we may get away from the 6th Corps & the curse of the 2nd C. V. H. A. Gen. McKensey [Ranald Mackenzie]…has already been the means of keeping us out of two good jobs because we are a No. 1 fighting regt. & win laurels for him. He would lead us through Hell itself if it would get him another star. The Jonies keep coming in every night in large squads. They are their own peace commissioners. Their pickets are apt to fire on them…the other night 4 were killed before getting to our lines. We generally pay no attention to their firing for fear of injuring those coming over but the boys had to return the compliment that time…good afternoon, H. S. Sackett." The original stamped transmittal cover, addressed: "2nd Asst. Engineer, Augustine Sackett, U. S. Str. Mattabasett, Albemarle Sound, N. C. via Fortress Monroe & Roanoke Island.", is included. VG. 200-300
