A nice war-date Union soldier's, 3pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Charles H. Roney (signed, "your son, Charles 2nd Sarget., Co. D., 16th Regt."), Co. D, 16th Ohio Vols., "Camp Patton, [Flat Lick, KY], May 18, 1862," in part: "…we got orders to strike tents…which we did…we got new tents. They are the Sibley tent and now Camp Patton looks like a new city…ere this reaches you there will be another hard fought battle…and Cumberland Gap for the rebels…are about 10,000 strong at the gap and we are about 15,000…we have 4 batteries of artillery and two 32 pound rifle Parrots…and two 20 pounders…you may look out for the Bloody 16th Regt as being in the thickest of the fight for we are the best drilled regt in the 7th Division and Genl. Morgan says we can take the gap by ourselves…the fighting is gig to be did with cannon. We are going to work them like McClellan did at Yorktown, shell them out…we had a Grand Review here the other day, our brigade and the Wisconsin Battery, had a sham fight and…it beat any…Circus you ever saw. I would have been home when the circus was there. I heard that it was Mabie's Circus and [the] manager…is the man that I traveled with. I would like to been there to whipped Ben Green and if ever I get back I am going to give him one of the Damnest whipping he ever had the (Damn Son of a Bitch)…I think my consigns are playing Hell having young ones. They had better have them before they are married…there is a Regt of cavalrymen passing going towards the Gap. Look out for a fight…".
