A good war-date Union soldier's, 4pp. 4to., written by Sgt. Charles H. Roney (signed, "your son, Charles…Sarget., Co. D., 16th Regt. O. V. U. S. A."), Cumberland Gap, June 25, 1862, Clarborne County, Tennessee Valley, 7th Division, Army of Ohio, 26 Brigade, 16th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, U. S. Army," in part: "…when I was sick the doctor wanted me to go to the hospital but I told him I would not…for 9 men out of 10 that goes…ever comes out alive…our brigade was going down to Clink River to camp. It is 6 miles south of this place…the rest of the Division was going to stay here and fortify this side of the gap for General Morgan got a dispatch to hold the gap and there is an engineer coming…to plan the fortifications…Lieut. [Samuel] Edge captured a Secesh flag when we came here and he said when we come home he was going tot carry it through…I guess Pat Hirst [Patterson Hirst, Co. F, 62nd Ohio. Roney is most likely referring to the regiment's poor performance during the battle of Port Republic, Va., June 9, 1862] is a Dam coward. Haint he. I am glad I did not go into his company and I pity the boys that did …". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor soiling, else VG.
