War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], "Dawfuskie Island, S. C., March 24, 62", in part: "…the Reg. has left Hilton Head…we were ordered into line of battle last Thursday and marched to the wharf…and set sail for Dawfuskie Bay…we marched four miles to General Veazy's Head Quarters…we are here within five miles of Fort Pulaski and 12 miles from Savannah. We can see Fort Pulaski…we are on a plantation formerly owned by Mr. Dunn. He died about 30 years ago and his wife Mrs. Dunn now owns the place with fifteen Negroes. The lady is in Savannah…Gen. Veazey [is] expecting to attack by the Southerners. Our men are going to…attack Fort Pulaski this week and after they take Fort Pulaski…there is one fort more (Fort Jackson) and 2 or 3 batteries more…and Savannah…there was two…boys…fooling and one presented a pistol to the other and says you will surrender…the pistol was loaded…and a ball lodged in his stomach above the waist …they don't think he will live. He caws carried to the hospital of the 48th New York…they could not find the ball. He is in critical condition…two fellows (soldiers) from Fort Pulaski, deserters, came over here…they belong, one in New Jersey, and one in New York. They say there is 400 soldiers in the fort and one company of them are Union men…". VG
