War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., August 4, 1862, in part: "…we had three funerals here last week. Two were buried out of our Reg. and one in the Forty Seventh Penn. There is a grave yard about one third of a mile from here where there is fourteen buried in a trench, all from a Michigan Reg. and all buried at once at the time of the battle…last winter…six of a New Hampshire Reg. were buried at the same time. Lieutenant Colonel Ely of our Reg. has been promoted colonel of the Fourteenth Conn. Reg. He wet from here to take his command yesterday…our Reg or most of them miss him. As a soldier he is fitted for the post…Major Spidell is to take his place…our company in respect and for the love…for Col. Ely subscribed seventy dollars towards getting Colonel Ely a sword on which will be engraved 'Presented by the Soldiers of Windham County; Co. A. Sixth Reg. Conn. Vol to Col. Wm. G. Ely for the respect they showed him as a Soldier and Gentleman'…I gave one dollar towards the sword…". William G. Ely (1837-1906) was promoted colonel of the 18th Conn. and was captured during the Gettysburg campaign at Winchester, Va., June 15, 1863. VG.
