War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 5pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., Oct. 28, 1862, in part: "…our Captain had a letter…from Col. Ely rendering his thanks for a check of one hundred dollars from Co. A…and said he could not find a sword worth the amount of the check…so he going to have one made to order…you heard we had an Expedition …to the main land…a deserter come from there this morning and days that the Rebels loss was nine hundred thirty six killed…we are going to try them again. We are waiting for reinforcements…General Mitchell says he is going to have the rail road that runs from Savannah to Charleston if it costs every soldier he has got. Our number did not exceed four hundred in all killed, wounded and missing. Our Colonel [John L. Chatfield, MWIA Fort Wagner, July 18, 1863] led his men…in the charge three times and was going to the fourth time when a ball took him in the thigh and went through his leg…". VG.
