War-date Union soldier's letter, 7 1/2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., Dec. 1, 1862, in part: "…our regiment has gone to the Ferry again on picket…we had our mail robbed of some fifty letters and six or eight pictures. The letters contained about fifty dollars…they got a young man belonging to Co. I…on suspicion of committing the deed. He will be tried for robbing the U. S. mail. They think there is sufficient proof against him…if it is proved against him. It will be hard with him…everything else is so high I am not going to to buy anymore at these high prices…I can save my money and send it home…it will do you more good than it will these soldier robbers…have just heard that Burnside is in Richmond two miles in advance of the Rebels…this is cheering news…a party of Rebels tried to camp at the Capen plantation where we go on guard but were released…by the firing of muskets. A whole company firing on them (two boat loads of the Rebels some thirty in number) and killing quite a number. They skedaddled and went back as fast as they could. This is the third time they have tried to land but [the] yankees [are] too much for them…". VG
