War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., Jan. 17, 1863, in part: "…I heard of both…Union Victories…I am glad to hear of a Union Victory any time…there was an expedition started from here made up of a small force from…several regiments here and Hilton Head. They went down on the coast of Florida to capture a lot of lumber from the Rebels…when going up Nassau River they were fire[d] at by the Rebels. Our men fired back and…some fo them were killed or wounded. Our men went ashore and found that the Rebels had burned the lumber…they got on St. Johns River and got a lot of lumber that was there. They got their lumber and came home, was gone ten days [and] went ninety miles. Two of the Third Rhode Island boys got killed but none out of our regiment…twenty our of our company went. There is another expedition to start from Port Royal soon [commanded by] Comodore Dupont with five iron clad gun boats…to attack Charleston. He thinks he can take the city in five hours…if he is successful this war will be played out…". Actually, Du Pont did make the attack and failed. As a result he asked to be removed from command and was put on the retired list seeing no further service in the Civil War. VG
