War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Beaufort, S. C., Feb. 22, 1863, in part: "…I worked yesterday on the breastworks shoveling. They have the breast works most done. They have large guns to mount on the works that were captured on a battery at James Island while we were there…our colonel has not come back…he got left in New York…yesterday we heard quite a noise of booming of canno. It was our gun boats firing away at a large battery about a mile long up near Savannah. Our folks routed them and took the fort…". VG.
