CDV album, 50 pages, 5 1/2" x 6", ca. 1860's, Western Kentucky. 43 CDV's and 4 tintypes are housed in this exciting photograph album belonging to a Confederate family. A sampling of the CDV backmarks show that photographers from cities such as Hopkinsville, Louisville, and Paducah were engaged by the sitters. The album opens with well-known commercial CDV's of the Confederate High Command, Jefferson Davis, Joseph E. Johnston, and a pre-war image of Stonewall Jackson. The remaining images show men, women, and children. Highlights include the following: CDV of a Confederate officer, Bell & Sheridan backmark, Clarksville, Tennessee. Although there is no visible indication of rank, this fellow wears a double-breasted gray frock coat with matching trousers, and what appears to be a regulation gray kepi with a braided crown. He is also wearing an 1851 Regulation US sword belt rig minus the sword. Most intriguing is that his left sleeve appears to be empty and is tucked behind his back. Clarksville, Tennessee is just south of the Kentucky line and hosted recruiting camps for Kentucky Rebels...Plus; CDV of a Confederate Cavalry Second Lieutenant, no backmark. A single bar on this junior officer's collar indicates his rank. He is wearing a knee-length double-breasted frock coat, riding boots and an inverted 1851 Regulation sword belt rig with two holsters. In the lieutenant's left hand, unattached to the belt, is what appears to ba a Model 1850 foot officer's sword. This is probably a photographers prop. All in all, a splendid image of a Kentucky cavalier who could have ridden with John Hunt Morgan...Plus; CDV of a seated Naval Midshipman, no backmark. This young man is probably in the service of the Union. Another CDV showing his head an shoulders only has a Boston backmark and he is wearing the shoulder straps of a U.S. Navy Ensign. Our mariner could stand further research...Plus; CDV of a young girl, E.H. Chamberlain backmark, Paducah, Kentucky. This rebellious little sprite is in a gray military-style dress and has a secession cockade on her hat....Plus; 1/9th plate tintype in paper CDV case. A very young teenage boy is wearing a gray double-breasted frock coat with military buttons painted gold. What is the story here?...Plus; Two images of boys wearing short gray jackets of a military cut. All images are VG to Fine condition. The ablum's cover shows some wear, however the binding and interior leaves remain sound. Overall Fine condition.
