War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., April 16, 1863, in part: "…our Reg is under marching orders…we are to move in a day or two…the stars and stripes float wherever we go…our entire brigade is going consisting of Sixth Conn., Fourth New Hampshire, Seventh New Hampshire, Third New Hampshire. One brigade has gone North embarked today. Another embarked last Monday to join General Foster's Division…we privates never…know what is to be done until it is done….I saw a private belonging to the 52nd Pennsylvania Reg camped on Pinckney Island…who said he had been in five battle…he was in the battle at Malvern Hill. He said they fought two hours and the Rebels retreated and left. He said the Rebels were fifty thousand strong while our number did not exceed ten thousand. We drove them. At one time…they piled up dead bodies to shield them from the sight of our guns six feet high…it was a sight to behold a battery of daed bodies slain on the field…thrown up to protect them from the enemy…the 52nd Pennsylvania while on picket here captured two Rebel Pickets and shot two. They are quite bold. They often show themselves…if we fire at them [rebel pickets] they are sure to trouble us…the Sixth don't trouble them…so they let us alone but there are some Regts that delight in tormenting them…". A bit soiled, else VG.
