War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Folly Island, S. C., June 21, 1863, in part: "…our company numbered 62 of sick, lame, lazy and those on duty present…there was four absent on picket, nine detached…on duty making 75 all told. There was thirteen on the sick list this morning. Some are trying to get their discharge and so it makes…it harder for us…we are not doing work on the breastworks now. Our company moved to the Regiment…last Friday and now are doing picket duty. We have a very good camp on the banks of the ocean. General Gilmore is hard at work here having batteries built and laying plans for an attack…doing all he can to effect his way into Charleston…the One Hundredth N. Y…went across the river. Captain Payne has made a map of the country around Charleston so we can lay plans to take the Secesh country. Friday night I stayed aboard the Steamer Mary Benton which lie in the river…twenty four of us stayed there as guard . General Gilmore and our paymaster was aboard with the money to pay us off with…there was four Rebels came across the river last night and gave themselves up to Union troops and are here on this island…eight started to come but four went back. They swam across…".
