War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Halsey Bartlett, Co. A., 6th Conn. Vols., [KIA Bermuda Hundred, Va., 6/17/64], Hilton Head, S. C., Oct. 2, 1863, in part: "…thing[s] progress slowly at Charleston or Morris Island rather…all of Morris Island is ours now. Our troops advanced onto James Island and took possession of a part of it and are now throwing up breast works and fortifying there…Gen. Gilmore is the man for this department…he has another star added to his honor and now ranks as major general…Rosecrans has had another sever battle [at Chickamauga] and has drove the Rebs and whipped them…the Rebs don't seem to gain many victories of late. Nearly all the Rebel strongholds are taken. They are loosing confidence in their President (Jeff Davis) an a great Union feeling prevails throughout the seceding states…Peace is near. I would like to know what the Rebs are holding out longer for they might a s well give up now. If Jeff Davis aint out the way…he will be assassinated. There are one hundred prisoners going from here North in the next steamer…three from each company…are to go with them. They are bound for New York…". VG
