A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. folio, written by Sgt. Nathan Cory, Co. C, 101st Penn. Vols., (POW Plymouth, N. C., April 20, 64), "On the road to Richmond, [Va.], April 11, 1862", in part: "…we are boath alive and well…we was in the…edge of the battle of Williams Port [Williamsburg] where the big fight was last Monday. There was one man got wounded. The most that came to us was shells [and] a chance musket ball came once and a while to see us. There was a many ball went through John Moore['s] canteen and it being to his side…hit the man behind him on the leg. There was three men wounded in our regiment. Well Peter I tell you it is the hardest sight I ever seen to go over the battle field after the battle is over. We have been in pursuit after them ever since…they left Yorktown…we are expecting another fight in a short distance from here but I think we can give them hell anywhere…I have seen a great many dead wounded and prisoners rebel since last Monday…I guess the next fight will be at a big swamp…John got a letter from your old woman…tell the old woman to take it easy. We will be at home by and by…you can tell the folks we are not aging to stop till we run the rebels out of the world…Nathan Cory to Peter Baley…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
