A rare pair of war-date West Virginia soldier's letters, totaling 7pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Nathaniel Lewis, Co. G, 6th (West) Virginia Vols., Green Wood, Va., April 1, 1863, which no doubt concerns the little known skirmish at Hurricane Bridge, West Virginia on March 28, 1863 in which the Albert G. Jenkins tried to bluff the 13th West Virginia into surrendering, but was instead routed by the well intrenched and tenacious Union force, in part: "…I was sorry two here that John Moore [Co. C, 101st Pennsylvania] got so bad hurt…tell Hugh I think it a very mean trick of him when he moved to take my ax and my hammer and tell him if he misses the machete he lost for me…that if he can git along with it I can git along without it…Old Jinkens [CSA General Albert G. Jenkins] got in on Canaway and our forces whipped him bad, killed three hundred and wounded nine hundred and there was one of our men got killed and six wounded …there was fourteen thousand soldiers went through here last week. They were going to Richmond…Nathaniel Lewis…". The second letter is also from Greenwood and is dated April 18, 1863, in part: "…tell Hugh…if the old woman agreed too pay him it is more then I know but still that is n reason he should take my ax away. If he had told me ore rote to me I wood have sent some money…but he is out now. If he had not taken my my ax I wood have paid him…we have to go to building block houses here…fore safety…to go in. Times is hard here. Corn is one dollar a barrel…potatoes is one and a quarter…and still raising…Nathaniel Lewis…". Both original stamped transmittal cover are included. VG
