A rare war-date West Virginia soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Nathaniel Lewis, Co. G, 6th (West) Virginia Vols., Cornwallis, Ritchie Co., West Va., July 14, 1863, in part: "…my wife is sick and I cant get to go home to see them…I hope the day will come that we all may go home to stay and all in quietness too…the officers is so mean that I hope that they may never get home again. Dear sis I am sorry to say that the rebels had me as a prisoner once but they paroled me. I returned to my company and too keep a gun again…I don't want to be taken again. There was two weeks I was with them. I was used bad. I did not very much two eat. I nearly starved to death when I got away from them. The people thinks the war will soon bee over here but I don't no. I want two no what is the talk up there…Nathaniel Lewis…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
