Massachusetts Governor John Albion Andrews Civil War Date Letter Signed, one page, 8" x 10", on Commonwealth of Massachusetts Executive Department letterhead, Boston, November 16, 1863, to Richard Frothingham, Boston. The letter reads, in full: "Sir: I have the honor to invite you to be one of a number of gentlemen to form a Commission representing this Commonwealth at Gettysburg, Penn., on the occasion of the oration by Mr. Everett, and the other Commemorative Ceremonies on the 19th inst, at that place. If you find it convenient to be present, please use this note as your evidence of your appointment. I am respectively & obediently yours, John Andrew". Richard Frothingham, Jr. (January 31, 1812 - January 29, 1880) was a Massachusetts historian, journalist, and politician. Frothingham was a proprietor and managing editor of The Boston Post. He also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and as the second mayor of Charlestown, MA. At the dedication of the hollowed ground at Gettysburg, Edward Everett gave an eloquent, yet lengthy, two hour speech. Everett's speech was to be the highlight of the event, but was overshadowed by the next speaker, who gave a brief three minute 272 word speech, that being President Lincoln's Gettysburg Address. A historically significant letter.
