A war-date Union officer's letter, 2 1/2pp. 8vo., written by 2nd Lt. Orton Ingersoll, Co. A, 11th Illinois Vols., Natchez, [Miss.], July 27, 1863 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…we are in a very healthy place and a handsome place. It is the cleanest place…I was at the Catholic church yesterday. They had the best music that I ever heard in church…the sermon was a very good [one.] All the balance was mockery. It is a sin in the sight of god. the citizens here are very bitter towards the Union. The Methodist parson said that the methodist parson said that would not live in the Union if the south come back…we can spare him…and all others of his stripe. They will be no loss to [the] community…from your Uncle, Orton." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
