War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., Morris Island, S. C., Nov. 14-19, 1863, in part: "…we are now permitted the privilege of holding meetings which are carried on by one of the agents of the 'Christian Commission'…we have just been reinforced by a couple hundred of conscripts or substitutes and we shall have a job…drilling them and making soldiers of them…the fire on Sumter continues night and day…the old fort looks as though its end had come…I should not wonder if we din't try to take Charleston…at any rate Gillmore does not seem to be in a hurry…I hope in the future as I have in the past to be found in the front not fearing to face death with a calm and undisturbed mind…".
