A complete and authentic issue of the New York Daily Tribune, August 28, 1863, 8pp., disbound, VG. Front page report, “The Lawrence Massacre. No Prisoners Taken - All Killed,” headlines the 1/2 column report. Then, from the interior, a second report “The Lawrence Massacre. One Hundred and Fifty Persons Killed - One Hundred and Twenty Five Houses Burned - Brutality of the Banditti,” runs another 3/4 column. he attack on August 21, 1863, targeted Lawrence due to the town's long support of abolition and its reputation as a center for Jayhawkers and Redlegs, which were free-state militia and vigilante groups known for attacking and destroying farms and plantations in Missouri's pro-slavery western counties.
