War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64; POW 6/11/64 while wounded-confinded at Florence, SC & DOD upon parole 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Winchester, Va., Apr. 3, 1863, in part: "…we are all well here and harty as bucks…I stood the tramp from Romney first rate. We have got a full set of officers in our company now. Our first lieutenant has come back and he is our captain…Frame is first lieutenant and Ro. Knowles is second lieutenant…George Bean is orderly and Ed Fuller is promoted sergeant. We have been brigade over again. We are in the first brigade now. Colonel Washburn has come back to the regiment…our Brigadier Jenerals name is Elliotte. [Washington Lafayette Elliot (1825-1888) Union cavalry general WIA 2nd Bull Run.] We have got fore Ohio regiments in this brigade. The 110, the 122, the 123 and the great and adorable and splendid, outrageous, cowardly 116th with the Upshier battery and two regiments of cavalry. They are practicing with the cannon this afternoon…direct your letter to Co. I, 116th Regt OVI…E. W. Frost…". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
