War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64; POW 6/11/64 while wounded-confinded at Florence, SC & DOD upon parole 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols.,"Camp at Sleepy Creek, Morgan Co., West Va., March 6, 1864," in part: "…there has been a little sutra in the Potomac lately. General Kilpatrick has been a strirring the rebus…he tore up the railroad between General Leas and Richmond and drove the rebus into Richmond…he has formed a junction with General Butler at the White House…there is quite a stir in the armies…everywhere…I hope with in the course of a week…we will have some good news…lieut. Frame…said that he was coming back…but he has not made his appearance yet…I a afraid he wont…Col. Washburn said that he was a going to have him back but I don't think that he can get him…I wish he would for I think he is the best officer that we ever had in our Co…this is a very good place to stay…there has…to be men on the road and they say that we mite as well stay here as any body else. There was a lot of negro soldiers went by on the cars…they ware lusty fellows…I am glad of it for if they are a going to be free as they certainly will…they had mite as well fit for it as [do] the whites. They hant any better to be shot at than anybody else and they can stop a bullet as well as any other fool…E. W. Frost…". Frost's phonetic spelling has been corrected. VG
