War-date Union soldier's letter, 6pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64; POW 6/11/64 while wounded-confinded at Florence, SC & DOD upon parole 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols.,"Camp at Sleepy Creek, [Morgan Co., West Va.], March 30-31, 1864," in part: "…thare was quite a flurry here day before yesterday. Col. W[ashburn] came up here and gave orders to be ready to leave…and march to Martinsburg…but he came up in the evening and countermanded the order…I am very glad we did not leave here for it rained all the afternoon…and snowed last nit…about 6 inches deeps…the creeks are up a howling…it would have went pretty hard with us…good by for this time. More anon…[March 31]…the old guerrilla chief captured some of the N. Y. boys…he stopped at a house and left his horse and all of his traps on it…one of the N. Y. got one of his revolvers out of his holster and shot one man and then jumped on…the horse and Old Mosby came out to see what was the matter and got a bullet put close by his head…the man asked him how he liked their way of fighting. He got away with his horse, one coat and both of his revolvers…[it was] his favorite horse. The Co. [Company] are a talking of buying the horse off the government and giving it to the man that captured it. Thare was a train load of pontoon boats went by here today. Their destination is Williamsport…Well mother I will close this scratching…E. W. Frost…". VG
