War-date Union soldier's letter, 5pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64; POW 6/11/64 while wounded-confinded at Florence, SC & DOD upon parole 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., Martinsburg, Va., April 21-24, 1864, in part: "…we have had quite a stir around here…we left Sleepy and went to Harpers Ferry and stayed thare one day and two nites…they cloud not let us ride back on the cars but must trudge threw the mud rite along the railroad for twenty miles…it would not have been military for us to ride…you spoke of Wm. Frost…I have not seen him when we went to Harpers Ferry. They took him down thare…I did not get to see him. Some of the boys saw him and they said he appeared to be in good spirits…for me to help him I can't…I will try and do what I can. I don't think they will be very hard on him this time…[April 24]…thare is some considerable of a force assembling here now…it looks as if there was a going to be a move up the Valley from this place…there is a few stragglers, deserters coming in nearly every day, but not like they did last fall…Frost he is at Harpers Ferry. He will be tried by a general court martial…General Lee has sent a part of his force over into the Valley…General grant will do something before long…he is a moving the sutlers from the army and all other trash that is a cumbrance to the army. They have taken all the sick away from the Potomac to Washington…we heard that there was some excitement out thare and you was a looking for Old Lee…with all of his force. Well, I wish he would leave his den…and go over…then we could have a chance at the old bugger…it would awaken some of the folks around there and then they would now something of the effects of a big army…they clean out all before them and burn all behind them fences, houses and everything else that will burn…I do wish he would get out of his den before Richmond…E.
