War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64; POW 6/11/64 while wounded-confinded at Florence, SC & DOD upon parole 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "Camp at Winchester, Va., May 5, 1864", in part: "…the last letter I wrote…was from Martinsburg. We left the next morning and went to Bunker Hill…we went and took a look over the old fighting ground of last June the 13…we are yet camped on the old battle ground of the 123rd OVI and 12 Va. Them two regts found some of their dead comrades and took them up and reburied them. There is quite a large force coming here now…we will make another move up the Valley before long. There is two Maj. Generals here and several brigadiers. We fite mit Sigle now and Maj. Gen. Stahl is his chief of staff. Sigle is a small man with lite hair and sand mustache. Stahl is not more than five feet with curly black hair and a pearcing black…he is the clear grit. There was 8 or 9 Jonies taken prisoners last nite and one killed…there will be a general stir up among the Jonies before long. We have turned over our knapsacks and are ready to go at any time…we heard that General Grant had whipped Old Lee but I don't believe it…E. W. Frost…". VG
