War-date Union soldier's battle/wound letter, 1p. folio, written by Pvt. Ephraim W. Frost [POW Winchester, Va., 6/13/63; WIA Piedmont, Va., 6/05/64; POW 6/11/64 while wounded-confinded at Florence, SC & DOD upon parole 1/15/65], Co. I, 116th Ohio Vols., "in Hospital at Staunton, Va., June 9, 1864", in part: "…I am as well as could be expected at the present time. I received a slite wound in the rite breast last Sunday in the fight near Piedmont but I am doing fine now…17 of our Co. got wounded and one killed…that was R. B. Miller. He was shot threw the head. The others are a doing well only F. Warren…I afraid he never will get well. [He died of wounds on 6/20/64 and is buried in the Staunton National Cemetery.] He was shot rite threw. The last I saw of him he had no use of himself. C. F. [36 year-old Pvt. Consider Frost, DOW 6/29/64. Buried Staunton National Cemetery] is shot threw one ankle and threw the other leg. F. Paugh [Corp. Fayette Paugh] was shot threw the rite leg…but they are all a doing fine. It was a pretty hot place for about two or three hours but the Jonies got whipped and General Jones was killed. He will do no more fighting. There was no fiting here. The rebus left here…double quick. There was two siege guns left here. They ware 64 lbs pounders. I do not know how long we will be kept here. We have a nice place here. There is lots of wounded Jonies here. They are mostly from the army of the Richmond. Our fels captured a bout 12 or 15 hundred Jonies…last Sunday and the rest ware scattered everywhere…I remain your truly and most obedient son, E. W. Frost".
