Union General Louis Blenker, Published by E. Anthony, NY, Fine. CDV is approximately 4" x 2.5," on a mount with clipped corners, and minor staining. Albumen photo of a standing portrait of the General, with a backstamp by Anthony noting that the image was produced from a photographic negative from Brady's National Portrait Gallery. Brady's Civil War negatives fell into the hands of Anthony when he defaulted on payment for photographic supplies, and many of his most famous images were published by the Anthony firm. Blenker, 1812-1863, was born in Germany, and was a leading member of the 1848 revolutionary government in that country before being forced to leave. He was a farmer, and then a businessman in New York City before being commissioned to serve in the Civil War. He commanded a division of three German brigades, suffered great hardships due to neglect by the War Department, and later died in 1863 of injuries received in a fall from his horse earlier in the war.
