A touching war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Frederick E. Humphrey [KIA Fort Gregg, Va., 4/2/65], Co. B, 116th Ohio, St. Johns College Hospital, Annapolis, MD, Jan. 11, 1865 to Frost's mother, in part: "In behalf of your son Ephraim W. Frost who is sick in this hospital I write…to inform you of his condition…he has been very bad…much out of his head…he is more easy today. At times [he] gets very wild and is hard to control. The things you sent him came to hand…but he does not need them. He has two months pay and certificate for his ration money while…a prisoner which he wanted me to express to his brother…I thought I would wait to see if he did not get better which I now think he will not…he is as well taken care of as can be but his disease is one that most all the deaths occur from here (the chronic diarrhea)…when they get as low as he is hardly ever [do they] get over it…if any of his friends could come to see him perhaps it might be a benefit…thinking some of you may come I will not send the money…it is at the office in the safe so I was told by the ward master…respectfully, F. E. Humphrey, Sergt., Co. B, 116th Regt. OVI, Ward 11 U. S. Hospital, Div. 2, Annapolis, Md". VG
