A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Jerry M. Cramlett (Jeremy W. Cranibett in CW database), Co. I, 72nd Illinois Vols., Memphis, [Tenn.], Feb. 1, 1863 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…we have done some hard marching. We marched from Mose to Oxford, Mississippi, left Moseo on the morning of November the 28th and arrived in Oxford on Saturday the 6th…remained there until the 13th when we moved eight miles farther South…we were ordered back to Oxford. This is a very beautiful town with about four thousand inhabitants. We remained at this place but a short time. The rebels having made a raid on Holly Springs capturing some thirteen hundred of our fellows, destroying our commissary stores which were very large. Our supplies being cut off we had no other alternative but to retreat…leaving Oxford on…the 23d marched a distance of sixteen miles and camped…we marched to Lumkins Mills eight miles from Holly Springs…the next morning we received orders to be ready to march…by the time we had our knapsacks strapped upon our backs the bugle sounded and away we went on the double quick. It rained all that day, marched twenty five miles…we went to guard a provision train of five hundred wagons to Lafayette a small town on the Memphis & Charleston R. Railroad…old citizens told me they had not had such a snowstorm in the last ten years…we were ordered to this city. We are quartered in the Navy yard…the next move will be to Vicksburg…Jerrie.". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
