A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Jerry M. Cramlett (Jeremy W. Cranibett in CW database), Co. I, 72nd Illinois Vols., Vicksburg, Miss., Jan. 28, 1864 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…I don't like Vicksburg. It is a rough place. I don't know how long we will stay here. The 72" Regt is doing duty in town. A number of the boys are on extra duty at different places in town. Lieut. Colonel Stockton is on command of our Reg. The Col. [Frederick Starring] is acting Brigadier. Stockton has been trying to have the 72" relieved from duty here. He wants to take the reg. out to Black river…the general would not let us go. Said if we was out there we would have to stand picket every other day…love to you write soon to Jerrie, 72nd Ill. Vol.s, Co. I…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
