A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Jerry M. Cramlett (Jeremy W. Cranibett in CW database), Co. I, 72nd Illinois Vols., [n. p.], Sept. 24, 1864 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…the trees are beginning to drop their beautiful leaves and this cruel war is not over…the war cannot last many months longer. Grant says the Rebels have robed the cradle & the grave eagerly by garrisoning forts with old men & little boys. He says when they loose a man he cannot be replaced. This being true the war must soon come to a close…was out on several scout…the 29th of July the 1st Division went down the Mississippi we landed at Morganza, Louisiana, 180n miles from New Orleans. I like the country down there mutch better than here. We left Morganza Sept. 1st, landed here the 8th. We are 220 miles up the river from Vicksburg at the mouth of the White River…J. M. Cramblet, Head Quarters 2d Division, 17th Army Corps, care Genl. Dennis." The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG.
