An eight page Union letter written by Frank M. Spencer, company F, 11th Pennsylvania Cavalry, to his sister, Hautz's Div. in the Field, June 10th, 1864, VG. This letter, written in front of Petersburg, is well written and has plenty of battle content. In part, "We crossed the Appomattox in the night below Point ofd Rocks ... skirmishing nearly all the way but without loss... we went silent in solid column of fours facing the work in cool determination ... the leaden hail came in thick hot storm... as cross fire still on swept 70 horsemen supported by as many more until we gained the ditch; the enemy's works were massive, the parapets tho not high were full 16 feet broad, behind which the Rebels stood and poured forth their hissing storm of ball and buckshot ... men and horses were falling fast .. 1st Sergt Andrews here shot dead ... Corporals Ingalls and Sexton wounded and taken prisoners .. Phill Andruss horse shot from under him and he was taken, Burgess was shot and was ordered by the greys to surrender ... I felt a bullet brush my pants ..at this point the 1st DC with the 16 repeating rifles ... and soon entirely silenced the enemy's fire, and the enemy's works were carried by storm... we took about 40 prisoners ... Sergt Lamb was brought away and will be buried today with those honors ... his loss is an irreparable one to us ..."
