War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Corp. Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. Holt), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., [n. p., n. d., but Bermuda Hundred, Va., late May 1864], in part: "…Ned and I am permitted to be together once more and…as true brother we can share each others hardships and privations…I suppose that you have heard…what we are doing…Ben Butler, Q. A. Gillmore & [William "Baldy"] Smith are not silent witnesses of this campaign…a raiding force have just passed our camp that have just arrived from N. Carolina and have destroyed a great many miles of rail road between there and Petersburg…they were under Kilpatrick…when you hear of it you may know that it was a cooperation with us and that we are doing something in this direction…we will show the world that we are a Republic [and] that [we] are capable of maintaining its position among the nations of the earth…we are less than 20 miles from Richmond…and was within about 10 miles of it yesterday…Bill H[?] of Lafe Company is dead and also his captain. Maj. Randlett is wounded…". VG
