War-date Union soldier's battle letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Marquis L. Holt (signed your affectionate brother), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., "Camp 10th Army Corps, Va., July 13, 1864," in part: "…[dear brother] I was glad to hear that you had got your furlough extended and was getting along so well though your recovery will be slow. Please excuse me, Ned for thinking that you was wounded on the retreat. The reason why I thought so was on account of the place you was wounded & tell you Ned that was a warm place about that time and that cow-yard between the building s looked like a slaughter yard when we retreated, there being between 5 & 6 shot dead and as many wounded in a space not over 2 1/2 rods square. Most of our company were killed & wounded in that yard…everything is quiet in our front though at Petersburg there was heavy firing yesterday afternoon…there is considerable excitement here about the Rebel raid into Maryland and we are all hoping that if the North do not rise and expel the intruders that hey will make some of them dead heads think that this is a real war…I have rather a poor opinion of the patriotism of the North…when I see men here that are willing to risk…their lives for their country. We soldiers want to see that we are supported at home…Segt. M. P. Donley [WIA Deep Bottom, Va. 8/16/64] has got a commission as 2nd Lieut. and your humble servant is now acting Orderly…[William H.] Trickey [WIA Petersburg, 9/03/64; Fair Oaks, Va., 10/27/64; Fort Fisher, N. C., 1/115/65 & accidentally wounded 4/4/65] is now capt. commanding Co. C…". The original transmittal cover is included. VG.
