War-date Union soldier's letter, 8pp. 8vo., written by Sgt. Major Marquis L. Holt (signed M. L. H.), Co. E, 3rd New Hampshire Vols., "Camp 24th A. C. Before Richmond, Dec. 30, 1864," in part: "…last night about one hundred and fifty recruits arrived to our regt. which are the first that we have received since we came into Virginia. Among these are two of our old men who was discharged last August. They are a pretty middling set of men…before these recruits arrived we had less than 125 men for duty…our colonel [John Bedel POW Battery Wagner, S. C., 7/18/63 as lieut. colonel, promoted colonel (4/6/64) while imprisoned, exchanged (12/9/64) & BBG 3/13/65] has been exchanged…he is now at home on leave of absence…Lieut. Colonel Randlett has gone home…there is considerable doubt whether he will return…as he said that if the colonel came back…he should not. His reason…is, that he has commanded [the] regt so long that he doesn't feel it is his duty to serve…under any other officer…we can [not] blame him…for…he has lead us through a good part of our hardest fighting…of late our regt has been so small that we could not fill vacant places for unless a company musters 80 men, there can only be two officers mustered in that company…less than 80 men, they could not have a 2 lieut…Ned has just come in…and said that the 2nd Division, which went with Butler [tp Fort Fisher, N. C.] has come back and that the expedition …was abandoned…I shall have an opportunity of seeing some of the 4th N. H. boys and hearing about their movements…as to the reorganization of this Corps…both the name of the 10th & also the 18th Corps is dropped…in the future they may be taken up by some new organization…". VG to near fine.
