A good war-date Union officer's letter, 2 1/4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, "In the trenches at the front, not far from Petersburg, Va., May 27, 1864", in part: "…you may be surprised to learn that we are in the trenches-something very unusual for cavalry. Well you will not be any more surprised than we were to receive an order from Gen. Butler…to leave our horses in charge of a guard and march at once to the front, a distance of six or seven miles. We arrived here last evening about ten o'clock very tired, not accustomed to "Dasy kicking". While I write fighting is going on just above me, on our right. I hope the rebus will not disturb mental after I finish as a man is now waiting to take it to Bermuda Hundred…and mail it…love and kisses, Maurice. In haste". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
