A good war-date Union officer's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Maurice Leyden, [POW Darbytown Road, Va., 10/07/64, confined Libby Prison & Salisbury, N. C.], Co. B, 3rd New York Cavalry, "in the field near Petersburg, Va., Sept. 11, 1864", in part: "…I must say that I was not at all pleased to know that you 'hurrah for Little Mac'. I am inclined to think…that you sympathies are with the forty who nominated him…if there is one thing in this world that I would avoid more than another it would be a compromise with the South-nothing but unconditional prosecution of this war will do…what little sympathy I…had for the South at the commencement is now turned all to hatred. I fight now for revenge…in return for malicious wrongs that we have received from the South. I am in for any thing to whip and subjugate Jef Davis and all his followers. We can do it and we must [and] while we are so doing we shall…humble the Southern sympathizers at the North. Had there…been union at the North or if there was at the present time we could end this unholy war without any more bloodshed…affectionately yours, Maurice". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
