A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/2pp. 8vo., written by "Charles" a member of Co. E, 132nd Illinois Vols., Paducah, Kentucky, June 26, 1864 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…we were downtown one day with our fifes & drums & one of them [citizens] said look at that curly headed fifer…coming back by the house the boys preposed sitting down under the shade trees. The girls was on the porch. They went in when they see us stop. Then the boys went to work planning how they would get to talk with them. One wanted to do one thing & one another…at last some of them said less go around & get a drink…one went to the door & asked for a cup to drink out of. Ouch do you think come to the door. One of the blackest women I ever saw. I did not want to get a drink…looks showed it…but we all got to speck to them after all…they are handsome but not accomplished like the Northern girls. I had not seen a white girl…since we left Columbus. It is almost as good as a glass of beer…they [gunboats] let no steam boat pass the fort without stopping first. There was one going up when we were fishing. They shot at her with a blank, did not stop them they sent a 24 pound shell at her that made them come to shore. It happened to pass over our heads…they have arrested the crew & passengers. I have not heard what they have done with the boat-is tore up bad…I will send you some Southern flowers. They are no nicer than the Northern. There was [a] pretty girl gave them. I will tell you her name sometime. [I] might…bring her home with me…". VG
