A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 5 1/2pp. 8vo., written by "Charles" a member of Co. E, 132nd Illinois Vols., Paducah, Kentucky, July 18, 1864 addressed to Ellen "Nellie" Sherman, in part: "…I caught a bad cold by going into the river while too warm. I fell in, was going from shore on a boat. The boys commenced fooling &…myself with the rest landed in the river. I struck an old boiler, hurt me some…fore men has died since we left Chicago. One from our Comp. He was drowned coming from Columbus to this place…what did you think when you heard I was taken prisoner…I did half to run a little…but a good deal. [I] ventured most to far from the pickets, was after corn. Did not get any. We saw the Elephant but his legs was not long enough. One of the boys received a letter from canton. Said they heard I was killed…I cant think who it is that writes suck news home…I never would have run if there was not 3 times our number but…we know when to fight & when to run. [?] some Reb was taken that night. The boys are having what they call a little time. They have two darkeys on some boards in front of the Capt tent making them dance…only one thing I dislike about soldiering. If Uncle sam would feed us a little better…we are on[e] hundred day men. Are used in that way. I never will enlist in a new Reg again…it will [be] in the navy…rember kindly your brother, Charlie…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included. VG
