Occupied Georgia Broadside, “New Year’s Address to The Soldiers of Sherman’s Grand Army” 10” x 15”, on yellow paper, printed by Geo. Nichols, Svannah Geo., minor edge roughness not affecting text, variable type fonts and scrolling border make this piece very displayable. The bulk of the broadside is a nine stanza poem by Private R.M. Woodruff, Co. H., 30th Illinois, in part, “With Billy Sherman as our chief, we’ve done some things beyond belief ... But so it was Savannah fell, Warning traitors a death knell ....” Then, on the verso is a letter from Private James Neuman of Co. "C," 150 New York Infantry, written in pencil from Savannah, dated January 1, 1865. Writing less than two weeks after the capture of the Georgia city to a Mr. and Mrs. Tripp, Neuman gives his account of his regiment's part in the action, in part: "We came in front of the city Dec. 10 and was saluted with a few 6" Shells - which only caused us veterans to laugh after having been dosed pretty heavily at Atlanta with 64 Pounders. Our Company was detached from the Regiment and sent out foraging. . . . We joined the Regiment at night & proceeded the following morning to Argyle Island in the mouth of the Savannah River where we remained until the surrender of the city. We had one skirmish with the Rebels in which our Col. was wounded in the thigh, one Company lost one man killed by a shell from a Rebel gunboat. We was ordered back in the edge of the city where we now are." Neuman was promoted to corporal less than three months later.
