A great pair of July 1865 documents, both 1p. 4to., turning over to the state of Minnesota's care the war-worn battle flags of the 2nd Minnesota. The 2nd was organized in June 1861 at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. In their first major battle, at Mill Springs, Kentucky on January 19, 1862, they were so close to the enemy that their musket barrels nearly touched the Confederate muzzles. At Missionary Ridge during the battle of Chattanooga on November 24, 1863 they help spur the surge up the Ridge's rocky slopes that was unauthorized yet surprising successful. Their gallantry there helped win the battle and lift the Confederate siege of Chattanooga. They participated in the Atlanta campaign and Sherman's March to the Sea. The first document, 1p. oblong 4to., partly-printed, regimental quartermaster's form, Fort Snelling, MN., July 20, 1865 acknowledges the transfer of both flags, listed as "worn" by Lieut. John L. Kenny to Major John Moulton. The second document, 1p. 4to., on "Office of the Chief Mustering Officer, State of Minnesota" stationery, by Col. John T. Averill, adding rank, Saint Paul, MN., July 15, 1865, reads, in part: "Received of Major John Moulton, 2nd Minn. Vols. One sett Regimental Colors, and one sett of National Colors to be turned over to the Governor of Minnesota…". Both near fine.
