A good war-date Union soldier's battle letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Pvt. Jordan H. Lear, Co. I, 198th Penn. Vols., "Camp at Hatcher's Run, Va., Feb. 12, 1865," in part: "…we left our camp…5th of February and captured a line of Rebel pickets at Gravely Run…that night we fell back to Hatcher's Run where we had the fight on Monday. We got into the fight about 3 o'clock in the afternoon. In the afternoon the rebels drove the Second Brigade [of] our Corps three time across an open field and then we was called up to relieve them which we did with pleasure but out Brigade drove them…the balls flew as thick as hail. Our Adjutant's [James Orne] horse was shot from under him as soon as we went in. Col. Sickel [Bvt. Maj. Gen. Horatio Gates Sickel] had…one ball pass through his pant leg an another through the saddle which he sat upon but he sang out to us with a cheer…go in boys and give them hell. The…cartridges that I used…was fifty rounds. I haven't closed my eyes now for the seventh night…that is soldering for you…I hope that I may have good luck [until] my time [is] out and I shall never soldier again…our loss was about five thousand killed and wounded…Jordan H. Lear…Company I, 198th Reg. Pa. Vol., first Brigade, first Division, fifth Corps, Washington, D. C." Also included is the original transmittal cover endorsed by Lieut. Andrew A.
